A Rum Occasion

The delights of a good rum can't be understated. Two of the world's most iconic rum brands are leading the rum renaissance with some delicious drops that are designed to be savoured.

Better known as the spirit of sailors worldwide, rum’s origins are thought to date back to ancient India and China. The popular drink, made from sugar cane, was even mentioned by Marco Polo in a 14th century account of ‘a very good wine of sugar’ that he was offered.

Two of New Zealand’s most popular rum brands are also steeped in history. Created in 1862 Bacardi Reserva Ocho is one of the oldest private rum blends in the world. Although the Bacardi family kept it as their own personal reserve for seven generations, they now share this golden run with the rest of us, and it’s well worth it.

A bottle of Bacardi Reserva Ocho takes eight years to mature, producing a distinctive, refined flavour with notes of prune, nutmeg, apricot and vanilla. It’s very enjoyable on its own; or add a dash of Angostura bitters, a twist of lemon and a simple sugar syrup to create an Old Fashioned with a decidedly delicious warming flavour.

There is a new look coming for Bacardi Oakheart – Bacardi Spiced launching soon! If you’re feeling in a bold mood, Bacardi Spiced Rum is the fiery one. Made with a blend of natural flavours and spices, with a heady mix of light and deep notes, it’s the perfect rum if you’re in the mood for a classic rum and coke.

Like many good drinks, geography is key. Appleton Estate carries a beautiful, complex flavour that comes from the unique, lush and fertile terrain of inland Jamaica. Appleton Estate is one of the few rums in the world that can claim a ‘terroir’ – a unique set of weather, soil and geographic demarcations usually noted for wines.

Appleton Estate Reserve Blend is a combination of 20 rums, aged for an average of six years. A beautiful golden topaz colour, the Reserve Blend is full-bodied, smooth and delicately balanced, with spice and nut notes, followed by oaky honey, vanilla and a hit of hazelnut and dried orange peel. Delicious neat, it’s also a wonderful base for many a cocktail; try it in this delicious Buttered Rum Fizz that’s made to savour.

A little time to spare? Appleton Estate Rare Blend 12 Year Old is the ultimate rum experience that simply can’t be rushed. Deep oak, fruity and cocoa notes precede a hit of delicate molasses, vibrant orange peel, rich vanilla, subtle coffee, and a hint of toasted oak and almond. It’s an elegant base to any cocktail, or simply sip straight from a glass with friends.
