Ingredients

  • 40ml Monkey Shoulder Whisky
  • 20ml sweet vermouth
  • half a tablespoon runny honey
  • 2 dashes saline solution
  • a few dashes of sesame oil to finish

Take cocktail flavour inspiration from delicious new restaurant Xoong in Auckland's Mt Eden Village, which serves Chinese, Japanese and Vietnamese food and drink with a Kiwi twist. Serves 1

  1. In a coupette glass like the one pictured, stir the whisky, sweet vermouth, honey and saline solution to combine. Finish with a few dashes of sesame oil

    1. Salt is used by bartenders to balance the flavours in cocktails, bringing out the taste of certain ingredients like citrus and herbs, and tempering others such as sweetness and bitterness.
    2. Add 100ml boiling water to 5 teaspoons salt. Stir to dissolve then allow to cool before transferring to a bottle with a dropper.
