Drinks News: World’s Best Sav, Wine Auction Record, NZ Brand Wins Double Gold, Deep Creek Limited Edition

The affordable Kiwi wine that was just voted the best sauvignon blanc in the world, the bottle of Penfolds wine that just sold at auction for AU$78,000, NZ bitters brand wins multiple medals, and the hazy new limited edition from Deep Creek

Decanter magazine has just announced the best sauvignon blanc in the world, and two things are awesome about it. Firstly, it’s a Kiwi wine – Vavasour’s Sauvignon Blanc 2017 from Marlborough’s Awatere Valley; and secondly, it’s affordable (not always the case with award-winning wines). Bestowed with Best in Show and platinum medal accolades at the Decanter World Wine Awards 2018, this stunning wine has all the zesty citrus and tropical flavours and aromas the world loves about New Zealand savs, and has also been pinned with numerous gold medals since its release, in addition to being given five stars from Bob Campbell MW. You’ll smell and taste notes of citrus, blackcurrant, elderflower and tropical passionfruit in this classically refreshing and crisp sauvignon blanc. RRP$19.99 at Liquorland.

A rare Penfolds wine has set an auction record in Australia, fetching a whopping AU$78,000 – which is certainly a few dollars more than we usually spend for a Saturday night drop. The bottle of 1951 Penfolds Grange was bought by an anonymous online bidder, and is said to be past it’s best but of historical significance. If you’re looking for something that’s not past it’s best, is similarly made with a blend of shiraz and cabernet sauvignon, and costs $77,963.01 less, we recommend grabbing a bottle of Penfolds Bin 8 Shiraz Cabernet, a silky, smooth and textured red wine with aromas of pepper, ripe berries and liquorice, and flavours of spices, pomegranate, berries and oak. RRP$36.99 at Liquorland.

Kiwi cocktail bitters brand Elemental Distillers has just won double gold medals at the Los Angeles International Spirits Competition 2018 for their Blackberry & Balsamic Bitters and Coffee & Pimento Bitters, plus a silver medal for their Grapefruit & Hops Bitters. Made with ingredients from local producers, Elemental Distillers products are created in rural Marlborough by founders Ben Leggett and Simon Kelly and are great for adding flavour complexity to cocktails and mixed drinks, RRP$25 at selected Liquorland stores.

Get your hands on Deep Creek’s limited-edition Brewtiful Haze, a New England-style hazy IPA with tropical fruit hop aromas and diminished bitterness. This beer was created specially for the GABS beer, cider and food festival 2018 by Deep Creek in collaboration with Karla from Liquorland Porirua, Susie from Liquorland Forest Hill, Abeer from Liquorland Botany and Alan from Liqourland HQ. 440ml can RRP$8.99, exclusive to Liquorland stores nationwide.
