Villa Maria

50 Years of Exceptional Winemaking

Villa Maria is a Kiwi wine icon with a knack for creating delicious, sustainable and innovative vinos. See why they’re at the top of the winemaking game – plus we’ve rounded up a few of our faves to try.

When it comes to making truly exceptional wine, Villa Maria knows exactly what to do. The brand is a leader of all things sustainable and sensational, driven by passionate people, with 50-year strong history in winemaking.

Villa Maria is proudly New Zealand and family owned. It was once a one-man band, founded by then 21-year-old George Fistonich in 1961, who leased five acres of land from his father in Mangere, Auckland. George harvested his first grapes in 1962 and made his first wine under the name ‘Villa Maria’.

Nowadays, Villa Maria employs more than 250 permanent staff and exports wine to over 60 countries; a start contrast from the company’s humble beginnings.

Great wine comes from a good relationship with the land, so the sustainable vineyard practices established by George over 50 years ago are still in action today. This ensures the production of approachable, food friendly wines of the highest quality.

George was, and still is, a pusher of conventional boundaries. His persuasive and inquisitive nature has created an innovative culture – the very reason why Villa Maria continues to fearlessly create exceptional wines.
