Ola Pacifica produces delicious, dairy-free chocolate that directly supports Samoan cacao growers
We all love a little treat when the going gets tough, when it's been a long day - or simply because it's Monday. And treats taste a whole lot better when not only are they delicious, but the goodness is being paid forward to those who need a little help too.
Launching a new product range in the midst of a pandemic was never on the cards for Ola Pacifica's Nia and Phil Belcher, but the chocolate makers are delighted their dairy-free, sustainable and ethical chocolate is now available in New Zealand.
"A little treat can make all the difference," says Nia, who lives and works in Hawke's Bay. Ola Pacifica's range of Almond, Coffee and Orange flavours are deliciously smooth, and the chocolate is a gift that keeps on giving. Buying from Ola Pacifica supports villagers in Samoa, where 100% of the cacao beans are sourced. Nia, born and raised in Samoa, is committed to the communities and environment of her home country, and trades directly with over 200 growers. This way, she is able to ensure they are paid well beyond Fair Trade prices, and can afford education for their children and care for the elderly.
"We've been helping Samoa export cacao for a decade," says Nia, who began her business in 2010, making a traditional cacao-based drink from the beans. "The beans we harvest in Samoa produce chocolate that's incredibly high quality, and addictively delicious. Together with our growers, we are slowly but surely reviving a financially sustainable cacao industry in Samoa."
Ola Pacifica is one of two leading New Zealand chocolate makers producing carbon-neutral chocolate crafted in Switzerland. The range uses no milk or fillers, and comes in recyclable cardboard packaging. And most importantly - it tastes amazing.
