Get Your Mule On

From jalapeno peppers to cinnamon and nutmeg, here are four very different (and very tasty) mule cocktail recipes to wrap your lips around. Thanks to Tito’s Handmade Vodka for sharing the love.

THE BACK STORY: Mule cocktails were created in the US sometime in the 1940s (as with many cocktail stories, the finer details get a little blurry!) mixing a winning combo of vodka, ginger beer and fresh lime juice, and right from the outset these drinks would be served in signature copper mugs.

TODAY: Thanks to the renaissance of craft mixology, cocktails like the Mule have been seeing a revival, blending creative foodie flavours and high quality spirits. We reckon this go-to drink is enhanced with a premium vodka, and we’re currently digging on Tito’s, the handmade vodka from Austin, Texas that’s made in small batches using old-fashioned pot stills. Tito’s was originally created to be a vodka that was smooth enough to drink straight, and while that goal has been kicked out of the park, it’s also fantastic in cocktails.

THE COCKTAILS:

AMERICAN MULE

  • 45ml Tito's Handmade Vodka
  • 90ml ginger beer
  • 15ml fresh lime juice
  • 1 fresh lime slice (to garnish)
  • ice

  1. Add all ingredients to an ice-filled copper mug
  2. Stir and garnish with a slice of fresh lime


JALAPENO MULE

  • ½ a jalapeno pepper
  • 45ml Tito's Handmade Vodka
  • 90ml ginger beer
  • 15ml fresh lime juice
  • 1 fresh lime and jalapeno slices (to garnish)
  • ice

  1. Slice the ½ jalapeno pepper and remove the seeds, then leave it in the Tito’s Vodka to infuse for no more than 30 minutes
  2. Remove the pepper slices from the vodka, and add the jalapeno-infused Tito’s Handmade Vodka with the remaining ingredients to an ice-filled copper mug
  3. Stir and garnish with a fresh jalapeno slice and lime wheel


GRAPEFRUIT MULE

  • 45ml Tito's Handmade Vodka
  • 30ml grapefruit juice
  • 60ml ginger beer
  • fresh grapefruit slice and lime wheel (to garnish)
  • crushed ice

  1. Pour the Tito’s Handmade Vodka into a copper mug filled with crushed ice, along with the grapefruit juice and ginger beer
  2. Stir and garnish with a slice of fresh grapefruit and a lime wheel


SPICE & EVERYTHING NICE MULE

  • 45ml Tito's Handmade Vodka
  • 90ml ginger beer
  • ground nutmeg and cinnamon
  • 1 cinnamon stick (to garnish)
  • ice

  1. Add the Tito’s Handmade Vodka and ginger beer to an ice-filled copper mug, then sprinkle with the nutmeg and cinnamon
  2. Stir and garnish with a cinnamon stick
  3. Tip: to add a smoky aroma to your cocktail, light the cinnamon stick on fire for 5 seconds prior to garnishing, taking care to be fire safe
