Six Quirky Beers To Try Now

Looking for something different? We get a sneak peak of some of the unusual limited-edition craft beers that’ll be on offer at next weekend's GABS – Great Australasian Beer, Cider & Food Fest

Since it started, the GABS festival has been known for two things. One: for celebrating craft brewers across Australia and New Zealand. Second: for offering outlandish limited-edition beers made with flavours and references of everything from seaweed to strawberry jam and belly button lint.

Here we select six of the unusual beers we can’t wait to try next weekend at GABS, which runs June 16-17th (and if you haven’t got your tickets to this extravaganza of craft brews, tasty foods and great entertainment, get yourself into our ticket giveaway now).

CHOCOLATE FISH BY BEHEMOTH BREWING COMPANY (NZ)

An uber-chocolatey milk stout with raspberries to create the classic Kiwi treat in beer form. The perfect desert in a glass.

COSMIC CHAOS BY 8 WIRED BREWING (NZ)

An adventure for the palate, this sour, hoppy and malty black IPA is like a dark and tranquil black hole from which you’ll never want to return.

RYE ’N GOSE SLING BY COLONIAL BREWING COMPANY (AUS)

Hey good-lookin, how about sampling a handsome dose of rye malt for dryness and spice, Margaret River seawater for tender saltiness, and a dose of Broadside from The West Winds Gin. It’ll take you straight to La La Land.

FUNKY HOPPY PEOPLE BY WAYWARD BREWING CO. (AUS)

Get hippy and hoppy with Wayward's funky, hoppy and sour beer, which layers yeast notes over a tart yet complex malt, and gets all heavy with massive tropical and stone fruit aromas.

ROYAL TANNINBOMB BY YEASTIE BOYS (AUS)

An extra pale Double Earl Grey IPA bursting with citrus and floral notes, the Tanninbomb is like turning up to high tea on a Harley.

ESPRESSO MARTINI KOLSCH BY BLACKMAN’S BREWERY (AUS)

Cold drip coffee from Cartel Roasters in Geelong meets vanilla pods and roasted malt to create a dark Kölsch that's sure to get your engine revving.
