Born from the creative minds of a bartender and a visionary whiskey enthusiast in Ocean Beach, California, Skrewball Peanut Butter Whiskey emerged from a simple desire to innovate, to push boundaries, and to create something truly unique in the world of spirits.
Why Peanut Butter?
After migrating with his parents from Cambodia to Thailand and living in humble circumstances, Skrewball Whiskey founder Steven Yeng recalls that in those tough times, peanut butter was his "taste of freedom".
His parents suggested that Steven put his efforts into becoming a lawyer, engineer or a doctor. "But I was bringing home Cs and Ds from school [exams]."
Steven met his now-wife and business partner, Brittany, while at Elementary Collage. She went on to gain a Masters in Chemistry, and Steven opened his first bar – at just 22 years old!
"I didn't know what I was doing," he says. "But I put my love of peanut butter into everything we made – into wings, into noodles, into whiskey..."
An idea was born.
The couple worked hard in their respective careers, but after a family health scare and the birth of their first child, they wanted to give the liquor industry a crack.
"Screw it. How hard can it be?!"
The idea was audacious yet simple: blend the classic, comforting flavours of peanut butter with the smooth richness of whiskey.
While Brittany was on Maternity Leave, she started experimenting with the creation of a peanut butter whiskey, and in 2018 the couple launched Skrewball Peanut Butter Whiskey – a delightful fusion of two seemingly disparate worlds that would revolutionise flavoured whiskey.
Following Skrewball's hugely successful launch, a further 28 peanut butter-style whiskeys launched that year. And even though Skrewball was premium in product and price, people still preferred their brand over cheaper alternatives.
